The New Ferrari 458 Italia for 2011

The Ferrari 458 Italia manages to put a higher redline on the thrill meter. In addition to the more wicked acceleration promised by the more potent V8 and quicker automated dual-clutch gearbox, there is also an updated version of the active suspension system as well as massive, ceramic-composite brakes. Despite the V8's lofty redline, it's no slouch -- 80 percent of its peak power is available from just 3,250 rpm. The gearshifts from the new transmission are crisp and very smooth, and occur about as quickly as you can flick the paddles. This will also be the 458's only transmission; a manual will no longer be offered. Ferrari's performance estimates put the 458's 0-60-mph sprint at less than 3.5 seconds and its top speed at 202 mph.

The now familiar "manettino" control on the steering wheel allows the driver to adjust the configuration of the engine, transmission and chassis electronics, including the traction control, stability control, differential, damper and braking systems. Yes, this has been offered previously, but there are now a greater number of choices. Where the F430 would offer only a firm suspension setting if the driver wanted fast gearshifts, the 458 allows you to pair the most aggressive engine/transmission configuration with a more compliant suspension setting. All the technology works seamlessly to make the 458 as equally adept as a track day weapon as it is a docile and comfortable daily driver.
